Biden’s Veto Stance: Government Shutdown Looms

With a potential government shutdown on the horizon, President Joe Biden has vowed to veto a Republican-backed bill aiming to temporarily fund operations. The 2024 fiscal year ends on September 30, requiring swift action from Congress to pass new appropriations. However, both chambers are deadlocked, leaving a continuing resolution (CR) as the only option. Introduced by Rep. Clay Higgins, this CR proposes funding through March 2025, but its inclusion of controversial voter-related provisions has drawn criticism.

Biden’s administration opposes the long-term resolution, citing risks to national security and military readiness. The Office of Management and Budget claims it would weaken the U.S. military, especially in comparison to China. Senate Democrats also object to the election-related clauses.

With Congress only in session for 14 days before the shutdown, bipartisan negotiations remain critical.
