Howard University Rescinds Honorary Degree Amid Allegations Against Diddy

Howard University has officially rescinded an honorary degree awarded to Sean “Diddy” Combs in 2014, following multiple sexual assault allegations against the 54-year-old rapper. On June 7, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to revoke the honor after 2016 footage surfaced showing Combs physically assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura, in a hotel hallway. The Board's statement emphasized that Combs’ behavior was incompatible with the university's core values. Consequently, the university also canceled a 2016 gift agreement, disbanded a scholarship program named after Combs, and returned his $1 million contribution.

In November 2023, Ventura filed a federal lawsuit against Combs, alleging a decade-long pattern of physical and sexual abuse during their relationship. Although Combs settled the lawsuit out of court, the release of the 2016 video led him to publicly apologize. In a May 19 Instagram post, Combs admitted to hitting rock bottom and expressed remorse for his actions, stating he sought therapy and rehabilitation. Ventura also thanked her supporters, highlighting the ongoing impact of domestic violence and her journey towards recovery.

Further complicating his situation, Combs faced raids by the Department of Homeland Security at his Los Angeles and Miami homes in March as part of an ongoing investigation. His attorney, Aaron Dyer, criticized the raids as a “witch hunt,” arguing that the excessive force used was unwarranted. Combs, who was not detained, cooperated with authorities. Amid these legal troubles, Combs recently sold his majority stake in Revolt, the media company he founded, transitioning ownership to the company’s employees.
